Raleigh Cardiology was formed on August 1, 1979 by G. Ray Cheely and Charles Mangano. Shortly thereafter, they were joined by Virgil Wynia and Amarendra Reddy. These four physicians helped to build the WakeMed Heart Program into North Carolina’s busiest cardiac program. Dr. Reddy performed the first heart catheterization at WakeMed. The practice has grown to nine cardiologists and six physician assistants/nurse practitioners.
In addition to a focus on providing compassionate, evidence-based, cost effective medical care, the members of Raleigh Cardiology have contributed to the community in numerous other activities. Our physicians have served in medical leadership roles as the president of the area American Heart Association, president of the Wake County Medical Society, president of the WakeMed Medical Staff, chairman of the WakeMed Department of Medicine, chairman of Noninvasive Cardiology, and chairman of Invasive Cardiology. The physicians of Raleigh Cardiology have also continued to participate in cutting-edge clinical medical research. Through these efforts, it is their hope that the practice can contribute to the advancement of medical treatment in the area. Finally, our physicians have provided a large percentage of charity cardiology care in the triangle area, through programs such as “Project Access” and the “Open Door Clinic”.
